Barry is a minor but hilarious character from the Paddington films. He appears in Paddington (2014) and Paddington 2, and is portrayed by Simon Farnaby.
History[]
Paddington[]
In the first movie, Barry is working at the Geographers' Guild as a security guard. He flirts with Henry Brown, who is undercover, cross-dressing as a cleaner in order to gain access to the Guild's archives. Although Henry bears little resemblance to the ID in his apron—Henry is not overweight, does not have a facial blemish and is not missing an arm—Barry accepts his weak excuses, which include laser surgery and prosthetics. After Henry and Paddington block the Guild's archive system with a baguette, causing it to burst, Barry runs after them screaming. He is knocked out on the steps of the Guild by a capsule from the archives that dislodged itself from the system during the chaos.
Paddington 2 (2017)[]
In Paddington 2, Barry is working as a security guard at St. Paul's Cathedral. It is unclear whether he still works at the Geographers' Guild, but it is most likely that he was fired due to his incompetence. According to himself, Barry has the title 'Vice Deputy Head of Security' at the cathedral. When Mary, Jonathan and Judy ask him for his testimony, Barry gives it with pleasure. He was first on the scene when a nun (Phoenix Buchanan in disguise) went to the Whispering Gallery and caused a statue to fall and crash onto the floor of the cathedral. Barry attempted to catch the nun but was predictably unsuccessful, and the nun vanished into the night.
Personality[]
Barry is flirtatious, slow and incompetent. He doesn't take his job too seriously, which may have gotten him fired from the Geographers' Guild.
Barry can always be seen with his signature brick-orange mug in hand. Although he should stay alert, agile and able to move at a moment's notice, Barry often sips his coffee while pursuing trespassers. This slows him down monumentally and prevents him from doing his job effectively or efficiently.
Barry's primary character trait is being attracted to cross-dressing men. He flirts heavily with Henry (dressed as a cleaner) in the first film, then in the second film describes Phoenix (dressed as a nun) as the 'most beautiful woman he'd seen in a long time'.
