History[]

Paddington comes from Darkest Peru, with his only known living relative being his Aunt Lucy, who receives letters from him at the Home for Retired Bears in Lima. not including his Uncle Pastuzo, who gave him his old stained bucket hat. Paddington stowed away in a lifeboat on the Samskip Innovator.[citation needed] He was found in Paddington Station in London and the Browns adopted him, thus giving him the full name "Paddington Brown."

Paddington (2014)[]

Paddington lived with his Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo in Darkest Peru. On Marmalade Day, he spends the day making marmalade with his aunt and uncle. On the night of Marmalade Day, an earthquake starts, forcing them to flee to an emergency earthquake bunker shelter on the forest floor. However, Pastuzo does not make it to the bunker in time and is killed by a falling tree. Heartbroken by the loss of Pastuzo, Paddington and Lucy leave the forest. He is sent away in London while on Lucy moves into the Home for Retired Bears.

Finding himself lost and alone in Paddington Station, Paddington meets the Browns who invite him to live in their home. While inside their home, Paddington causes chaos in the bathroom, frustrating risk analyst and father Mr. Henry Brown. By the end of the film, the Browns have adopted him into their family.

Personality[]

Paddington means well when he tries to help, but he occasionally makes mistakes that get him into trouble. He is very fond of marmalade and often keeps a sandwich containing it under his hat for emergencies. His adopted family loves him dearly and they always try to keep him out of trouble. When he is displeased with someone, he gives them a "hard stare" that his Aunt Lucy taught him if someone forgot their manners.

Appearance[]

"It seemed a very unusual kind of bear. It was brown in colour, a rather dirty brown, and it was wearing a most odd-looking hat, with a wide brim, just as Mr Brown had said. From beneath the brim two large, round eyes stared back at her."
— A Bear Called Paddington

Paddington is a small spectacled bear that came to London with only his suitcase and his red hat, given to him by his Uncle Pastuzo. When the Browns found Paddington and took him in, they gave him a blue duffle coat to keep him warm.

Over the years, Paddington's popularity resulted in many manufacturers trying to recreate his likeness. Gabrielle Designs - the first to make Paddington Bear toys - gave their toys Wellington Boots so the bears could stand up without falling over. Since then, most Paddington toys have worn boots. The company Eden Toys in the USA dressed their Paddington Bears in yellow hats and pale blue coats. The most common outfit and colour combinations are red hat, blue coat and red boots, or blue hat, red coat and black boots. In the first television series, Paddington wore a black hat and blue coat and occasionally, red Wellington boots. In the current films and most books, Paddington has a red hat and blue coat.[1]
