Sarah Winifred Elizabeth “Winnie” Bird (née Cambridge) is the Brown's live-in housekeeper and Mary Brown’s third cousin.
In the Paddington films, she is portrayed by Julie Walters.
Personality[]
Mrs. Bird is an elder, sweet and gentle woman. However, she gets easily angered if anyone insults her.
Her husband, Henry, was in the Navy, so she likes everything neat, clean and tidy.
Mrs. Bird doesn't get surprised easily, and takes well to the new addition to the household (Paddington). She claims that she stopped being surprised by things when the microwave oven was invented.
Appearance[]
In The Adventures of Paddington Bear, Mrs. Bird doesn't wear glasses and her hair is tied up in a ponytail but in the live action films, she's wearing glasses and her hair is down.
Abilities[]
- Clairvoyant Knees: Mrs. Bird's knees can predict the weather. This ability is not only limited to the forecast, but seemingly to unprecedented future events. Before anything starts going wrong in the bathroom, she predicts Paddington's misuse of 'the facilities' and subsequent flooding of the house.
- High Alcohol Tolerance: She managed to get onto the roof of the Natural History Museum after drinking at least half a bottle (presumably more) of Victory's Sailor's Strength Dark Rum.
- Powers of Illusion: In a deleted scene from a post-production script of Paddington 2, Mrs. Bird appears to have either masterful powers of illusion or actual magical powers. In a montage (scene 56), she vanishes a turnip and looks around, amazed. It is not known whether its exclusion from the final cut of the film invalidates this ability and makes it non-canonical.[1]
Quotes[]
- "I can feel it in my knees, my knees never lie." - Paddington (2014)
- "Actors are some of the most evil, devious people on the planet. They lie for a living!" - Paddington 2
