Mrs. Mary Brown (née Plunk) is the foster mother of Paddington, the wife of Henry Brown, and the mother of Judy Brown and Jonathan Brown. She’s very caring towards Paddington and the rest of her family. In the films, She is played by Sally Hawkins and later Emily Mortimer.

Personality[]

Mrs. Brown is very compassionate and kind. When the Browns first see Paddington, her husband Mr. Brown tells everyone to keep their eyes down. However, Mrs. Brown comes back and asks Paddington if he needs a home, exhibiting the value of kindness and sympathy. Even as her husband tries to evict Paddington from their home, Mary secretly tries to find the explorer for Paddington.

Mary is an illustrator for adventure stories. She enjoys her work and is very dedicated to authenticity. For example, she decides to explore the sewers of London as a way to research the story she is illustrating, which takes place in the sewers. In Paddington 2, Mary becomes interested in having an adventure of her own, and resolves to swim across the English Channel, showing she is ambitious and determined.

She is still curious about the world around her, which is part of the reason that she chooses to help Paddington. Her research for the adventure stories means that she is always learning new things and romanticising the world. It may seem idealistic but it is a good trait for Mary, as it keeps her—and her family by extension—hopeful about the world and its possibilities.
