It is the second sequel to the 2014 film Paddington and is produced by Heyday Films and StudioCanal. The new production company for this sequel is the American film developer Alcon Entertainment.

Plot[]

Many bear years ago, Paddington as a cub climbs a tree to reach an orange. The tree breaks, and Paddington falls into the river where he struggles until he is rescued by Aunt Lucy. In their forest home, Aunt Lucy tells Paddington that if he ever gets lost, he should roar and she will always roar back.

It is several years on from the last film, and Paddington is getting a passport. He struggles in the photobooth but manages to take a photo, and when his passport arrives he is presented with an umbrella by his neighbours to celebrate becoming a British citizen.

Paddington writes a letter to Aunt Lucy. Henry is trying to land a new account at work, but they want him to learn to "embrace risk". Mrs. Bird is working on her to-do list. Jonathan has taken to chillin' - gaming in his room, using his inventions to simplify tasks such as getting snacks and closing his door after his parents open it. Judy is applying for university, looking at ones far away. Mary is getting sentimental, painting the family as they were years ago when they all "fit on one couch". Paddington observes that although they all live in one house, they don't spend much time together as a family anymore.

Paddington receives a letter from the Reverend Mother at the Home for Retired Bears, telling him that Aunt Lucy has been acting strange - withdrawing from social activities and researching something in her room. Mary suggests the family goes to Peru to check on Aunt Lucy. Paddington farewells Mr. Gruber at his shop and spots a Peruvian rock figure that causes a brief flashback.

The Browns all travel to Peru, but when they get to the Home for Retired Bears, the Reverend Mother informs them that Lucy is missing. The Reverend Mother presents them with Lucy's glasses and bracelet, recovered from the jungle. Paddington investigates Lucy's room and finds a map with Rumi Rock marked. The Reverend Mother gives Mary a necklace with a pendant of St Christopher, saint of travelers. All the Browns except Mrs. Bird accompany Paddington to find Lucy.

At the river, the Browns meet the charming Hunter Cabot and his daughter Gina. They offer to take the Browns onboard their boat to Rumi Rock. While on the boat, Hunter sees the bracelet left by Aunt Lucy on Paddington's wrist, and reveals that it uses a knot language to encode a message that would help the wearer find the legendary El Dorado, city of gold. Alone in his study, Hunter hallucinates his ancestor coming to life, encouraging him to follow the message to El Dorado and retrieve the gold.

At night, Gina begs Hunter to turn the boat around and not go after the gold. Hunter agrees, but once Gina is on the riverbank he continues steering the boat ahead, leaving Gina behind. While talking to his hallucinated ancestor, Hunter is hit by the swinging boom of the boat and falls into the river.

In the morning, the Browns are waiting for breakfast when Paddington discovers Hunter and Gina are missing and no one is steering the ship. The boat takes a wrong turn into some rapids and is capsized. Everyone swims to shore and Paddington leads them into the forest in search of Rumi Rock. They settle down for the night and Paddington climbs a tree, then falls down the canopy into the river. He floats down and explores the jungle, finding a large rock figure similar to that he saw in Mr Gruber's shop. Hunter appears and tells Paddington that this is Rumi Rock and he translated the bracelet which says "the bear will show the way" to El Dorado. Paddington accidentally sits down on a "spiky red plant" and jumps up in pain, roaring. He hears another roar coming from far away, and remembers Lucy's promise that she would always roar back. He and Hunter follow the roars, and Hunter destroys a bridge to ensure no one can follow them.

Mrs. Bird becomes suspicious of the Reverend Mother and discovers there is a secret control room at the Home for Retired Bears. The Reverend Mother is tracking the Browns through a tracking device in the St Christopher pendant, and says they are in need of help.

The Browns encounter Gina in the forest, who helps them track Paddington and Hunter. She tells them that her father suffers from "gold madness" which is hereditary. When they get to the destroyed bridge, Mrs. Bird and the Reverend Mother appear, flying an old plane to pick up the Browns and follow Paddington and Hunter.

Paddington and Hunter follow the roars to a rock wall at the top of some old ruins, discovering that they were actually following echoes of Paddington's roars. They find a carving in the wall with a slot for the talisman from the bracelet. Hunter reveals he wants all the gold for himself and chases Paddington to get the bracelet. The plane crash-lands at the ruins, and the Reverend Mother reveals she is not a real nun and is Hunter's cousin so is affected by "gold madness". She purposely stranded Lucy in the forest and took her glasses and bracelet so Paddington could lead her to El Dorado. She says the bracelet was originally Paddington's and was on his ankle when Lucy and Pastuzo first found him. Hunter manages to knock out the Reverend Mother and leaves with Gina, choosing her over gold.

Paddington and the Browns enter El Dorado and discover an orange grove, a tribe of bears, and Aunt Lucy. She tells them the bears rescued her and took her to El Dorado, and Paddington was originally from this tribe. Paddington takes off his coat and hat to talk with the tribe. Jonathan helps to set up a marmalade-making contraption. The Browns start to get emotional at the thought of Paddington leaving them, but he asks if he can return to London with them.

Back in London, Mr Brown impresses the American account by showing a slideshow from Peru. Mary is making art about "flying free", and Jonathan is displaying his inventions at trade fairs under his brand Chill Inc. Judy is at university and has joined the student paper. Mrs. Bird remains at the Home for Retired Bears a bit longer, finishing off her to-do list with a disco party. The Reverend Mother is forced to become a real nun at the Home for Retired Polar Bears. Paddington invites the El Dorado bear tribe to visit London and takes them to all the sites, including Portobello Prison to see Phoenix Buchanan who is going to be released shortly. Phoenix casts three of the bears in his upcoming show "Goldilocks".

In June 2016, StudioCanal CEO Didier Lupfer stated that the studio was committed to making a third Paddington film. [1]

The story for the film has been written by Paul King, Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton. The screenplay will be penned by Mark Burton, Jon Foster and James Lamont.[2]

Paul King has confirmed that a script is 'well-developed and coming on nicely',[3] and that he is co-writing and executive producing the film, although he has stepped down as director. This will be the first Paddington film not directed by King.

In July 2021, it was announced that shooting for the film would begin in spring 2022.[2] It is assumed that this was halted due to COVID.

On 13 June 2022, it was announced that Paddington 3 had found a director and an official title.[4] Dougal Wilson has been named as the director in his feature film debut for the newly named "Paddington in Peru". Filming is set to begin in London, Peru and Colombia on 24 July 2023 while casting are in talks and Emily Mortimer's character to replace Mary Brown.[5]

On 23 October 2023, the release dates were announced as they changed it to November 8, 2024 in the UK and January 17, 2025 in the United States. They replaced Rachel Zegler in recast of Gina Cabot due to actors strike.[6] However, the release date was changed again to February 14, 2025, on Presidents Day and Valentine's Day weekend for United States release date.[7]

Reviews[]

There are critics by

  • Of the latest film, Peter Bradshaw wrote in the Guardian that the experience was "just as jolly as the previous two films, but not really as funny" and likened it to a "special episode of a TV sitcom that takes the cast to the Costa del Sol".
  • In the Hollywood Reporter, Leslie Felperin wrote that while the film "lacks the absurdist wit and decidedly dark edge that elevated the first two Paddington movies", it was "serviceable enough given its limitations".
  • Nick Curtis was more cutting with his two star review in the Standard

Trivia[]

  • This is the first Paddington movie not to feature Sally Hawkins reprising as Mrs. Brown, as she's officially replaced by Emily Mortimer, and possibly again in other future Paddington films.
  • During its theatrical release, the movie will be accompanied by K-Pop: Demon Hunters short film “Hot Lunches and Whereabouts” in which serves as the teaser for K-Pop: Demon Hunters.[citation needed] This is the first Sony Pictures movie to be accompanied by a short during its theatrical release since The Emoji Movie, which featured Puppy!.
