Trouble at the Launderette was originally a chapter in the third book about Paddington, called Paddington Helps Out.
Synopsis[]
Paddington decides to do the laundry for the Browns and Mr. Curry, but accidentally mixes up the temperatures on each wash. Paddington opts to get a beverage while he waits, but after he puts in a coin, the machine will not stop making coffees and he struggles to balance them all. He opens the washing machine but the cups tip into the machine, staining the freshly-washed pullovers that were stretched and unravelled due to exposure to 'very hot' water instead of the recommended 'warm'. Mr. Curry is very angry and berates Paddington for his carelessness, while Paddington hesitantly offers him a very large 'coffee-coloured' pullover.[1]
Summary[]
The Adventures of Paddington Bear[]
Paddington hears Mr. Brown sneezing, and he wakes up with a cold. Paddington asks if there is anything he can do to help, so Mr. Brown says to help The Laundry Man that comes. First, Paddington needs some wheels to travel the laundry around easily.
The laundry man comes but because Paddington doesn't answer, the van takes off. Paddington chases after the man but he is too late to catch him. He wheels the clothes through town where Mr. Gruber suggests taking the clothes to the launderette. He tells him the steps to wash laundry. Paddington goes to the launderette where a lady isn't sure he knows what he's doing, but Paddington mentions he does. He doesn't, and does things wrong for the most part.
After a while, Mr. Curry comes in and finds that he is in luck with Paddington in the store. He thinks that Paddington can wash his sweaters for him. Paddington puts in lots of detergent and the entire place fills up with soapy bubbles. The lady is annoyed, but figures that Paddington could use some help as it is his first time after all, plus he's a bear. She tells him the right things to do and all in all, he later surprises the Browns with their nice clean clothes. Paddington says it was easy despite being a phenomenon. Mr. Curry is also pleased with the sweater that now fits him, and gives Paddington a taffy candy.
